Safe Sanctuaries
In 1996, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church adopted a resolution designed to reduce the risk of child sexual abuse in the church. This resolution contained the following statements:
Our Christian faith calls us to offer both hospitality and protection to the little ones, the children. The Social Principles of The United Methodist Church state that “children must be protected from economic, physical, emotional, and sexual exploitation and abuse” (¶ 162C).
God calls us to make our churches safe places, protecting children and other vulnerable persons from sexual and ritual abuse. God calls us to create communities of faith where children and adults grow safe and strong.
Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes [a] child…welcomes me” (Matthew 18:5). Children are our present and our future, our hope, our teachers, our inspiration. They are full participants in the life of the church and in the realm of God.
On 8/26/2008 the Hertford United Methodist Church (HUMC) Council adopted the Safe Sanctuaries Policy for HUMC. This policy was effective January 1, 2009.
The Safe Sanctuaries Committee of HUMC requests that all adults of HUMC who work in any church sponsored activity with the children or youth of our church, including but not limited to: Sunday school teachers/ Superintendants, children’s church workers, nursery volunteers, Vacation Bible School leaders/volunteers, youth group leaders/volunteers, children/youth choir director/helpers, Children’s Ministry/Kids Konnection coordinators, etc. be knowledgeable of the HUMC Safe Sanctuaries Policy and Procedures. All adult workers must be at least 18 years of age. Periodic training will be held for those who wish to work with our youth and children in a supervisory/teaching position, etc.
